In this work we present the methodology and results to obtain 100% data availability for offshore wind Resource assessment and site characterisation via the combination of Eolos Floating Lidar solutions measurements with the Vortex GapFill (VGP) tool based on the LES – Large Eddy Simulations numerical model.
In this study a correction of the measured TI from floating lidars is applied for wind resource characterization. Two EOLOS FLS200, mounting a ZX300M continuous wave lidar, are currently measuring wind conditions in the New York bight as part of a wind resource assessment campaign by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
This study focuses on the comparison of the offshore turbulence intensity (TI) observed by both, a Floating LiDAR Device (FLD) and a reference fixed Meteorological Mast (MM). All the data has been obtained from the EOLOS FLS200 verification campaign that took place in 2015 at the IJmuiden MM (IJ-MM), in the dutch sector of the North Sea. The FLS200 mounts a ZephIR 300 produced by ZXLidars. The successful outcome of this verification campaign assigned the “until-then-prototype” EOLOS FLS200 with the precommercial level defined by the Carbon Trust Offshore Wind Accelerator (CT-OWA) roadmap [1], Stage-2. The campaign lasted for eight months, from March to October, and all the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) listed in the document where above the threshold of best practices proposed by the CT-OWA roadmap.
