R&D Project Awarded to Consortium Led by EOLOS to Advance 3D Wind Flow and Wake Measurement in Offshore Wind Farms

Published: 03 . 12 . 2025

EOLOS Floating Lidar Solutions, together with the University of Stuttgart, Whiffle, TNO, Pondera, REdouble, and RWE Offshore Wind, has been selected for R&D funding under the CETPartnership Joint Call 2024 for the project SSwiFT Wind. This initiative aims to revolutionize offshore wind resource assessment through the development of a modular floating LiDAR system that integrates both scanning and vertical LiDAR technologies combined with advanced numerical modeling.

Innovative Measurement Technology and Advanced Modelling
The project will deliver a validated, modular floating LiDAR system capable of capturing complex wind flows, turbulence, and wake effects—critical for optimizing offshore wind farm performance. This high-resolution data will be complemented by advanced simulations and numerical models to fully characterize the 3D complexity of offshore wind environments.

EOLOS Strategy and Innovation Director, Dr. Jordi Puigcorbé, commented:

“This award is a clear recognition of EOLOS and the consortium’s strong commitment to R&D, innovation, and sustainability. With this advanced technology, SSwiFT Wind is set to establish new standards in offshore wind measurement, supporting Europe’s clean energy transition.”

This research will be funded by CETPartnership, the Clean Energy Transition Partnership under the 2024 joint call for research proposals, co-funded by the European Commission (GA N°101069750) and funding organisations detailed on https://cetpartnership.eu/calls/joint-call-2024/fundig-organisations. This project will be co-funded by CDTI in Spain (and supported by the Ministry of Science and Innovation), PtJ (BMWE) in Germany and RVO in The Netherlands.

About EOLOS

EOLOS offers a combination of wind, ocean and environmental turn-key measuring solutions and digital services to the offshore wind industry. EOLOS obtained the highest commercial maturity, known as Stage 3, in April 2022 as defined by the UK’s Carbon Trust. Stage 3 signifies the highest possible level of availability and performance, providing minimal levels of uncertainty in site specific measurements. EOLOS’ products and digital services gather data efficiently for offshore wind developers and operators globally, accelerating the development phase while lowering costs and risk.
